Getting by.

May 27, 2009 · 1 Comment

We’ve been under water the past two days. The plumbing issue will probably last through tomorrow, realistically. Right now I’m relieved that we rent, having heard the price tag on the work that needs to be done so we can use the toilet, shower, and water without it backing up throughout the house.

This has been getting me by, however:

This is half of the Tactile Fiber Club’s may shipment. A soft 50/50 blend of angora merino, dyed with weld. I just finished handspinning the first ounce last night, while waiting for the landlord to call me back and give me good (or bad, as it turned out) news.

Today I’m going to hopefully plow through a good chunk of the second ounce, a springy poof of greens, pinks, and blues. With any luck I’ll have this plied next week. :)

Perfection is a state of mind?

May 19, 2009 · 10 Comments

They’re done! It’s virtually impossible here to take pictures of anything without the cats getting in the way. Especially the ballsack to the left, the black and white one. His name is Pono. His hobbies are: getting in the way, snuggling, obtaining pillow control, and walking underfoot.

Yarn: Noro Silk Garden Sock, 2 skeins

Color: #252 and 258.

Needle: US 1, 2.25mm Inox circulars

March 29th-May 19th

Lecture-knit!

I cast on at the toe, beginning with 20 stitches. Increased gradually to 58 total and began to alternate skeins every two rows. The heel is a short row, using #252 on both socks, and 4″ up the leg I began to increase 2 stitches every 4th row. I knit until they covered my calves, and then did a simple 2×2 ribbing to finish.

I could knit everything with noro. I’d be broke, but I’d be happy.

Almost there.

May 18, 2009 · 5 Comments

Maui has moved into the bed, and spends most of his time being a 'cave cat' during the day.

We’re nearly finished with the unpacking, most of the boxes that are still full contain books. I have a shelf that needs to be put together, and I think that’s all we have left! After that we’ll gradually start to replace furniture, set up our deck, and decorate. Exciting. I’m obsessing over scrubbie holders, paintings, and window coverings.

Yesterday we (I watched, M worked) set up the surround sound in the living room, figured out what I’ll be making for tonight’s dinner (this is my favorite foodie blog, btw), did a bunch of laundry. During the afternoon we drove down to the Chit Chat Cafe on the Pacifica Pier for lunch and enjoyed the sunshine. It was beautiful, we’re really lucky to live somewhere so quiet and serene this time of year. Last year we were sweltering in our East San Jose house, which would always magically get 10 degrees hotter inside than outside.

Finals are this week, so I probably won’t post again until afterwards. Here’s what I’m working on right now:

50/50 Angora Merino. 2oz, the May fiber club shipment from Tactile. Image links to their shop.

This is a dream to spin, and it completely makes me regret not signing up for the double-dose shipment. I’m spinning this on my .45oz Golding Cherry Tsunami, and it’s coming out a nice fine laceweight. Both are being spun separately, then they’ll be plied together. I’m thinking of knitting a scarf (rav link) from Knitted Lace of Estonia (amazon.com), what do you think?

Still alive!

May 9, 2009 · 6 Comments

Sorry for the long lapse. We’ve moved into a new house, I’ve written a (relatively shitty) rough draft of my junior thesis, had another round of mid-terms annnnnnnnnnd unpacked.

Throughout the week I’ll be photographing all of the crafty things I’ve been up to and will eventually return with an awesome post. For now though, I’ll leave you with the above picture. I now live .25 miles from the beach, we have a view of the ocean from our deck and I’m excited about actually wanting to go outside for the first time in… a long time.

We’ve managed to cram a three bedroom, three bathroom house into a two bedroom, one bathroom home. The cats are all moved in, we’re working on figuring out new furniture needs (fuck yeah, this means an IKEA trip!!) and I’m slowly decorating the house with action figures.

We had fantastic help from Tacha, Jon, Sara, Nick and my parents in loading/unloading the Uhaul. If it werent for you, we would have killed each other last weekend.
